Nicole Ari Parker is an American stage and film actor known for her performance as the fierce attorney Teri Joseph on the Showtime show Soul Food. Her name is currently her married name, Nikki Kodjoe. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland she showed an aptitude for acting in her childhood and received an award for the best Actress award in an Maryland high school contest. The path to acting began when she worked in the Washington Ballet Company as well as the theater. Contractor trained in classical ballet in Toronto. She was also a star academically. She attended the Etobicoke School of the Arts in Toronto, a fine arts institution which focuses on theater and dance. Contractor was inspired to pursue acting more seriously at the age 16 after almost 10 years of dancing. After she had completed high school, she received a full Scholarship to University of Toronto. At the University of Toronto she completed the Master of Arts in Theatre. She she also double-majored in sociology and psychology. Contractor was given the lead role in Pericles following her one year stay at University. She auditioned for it during the Stratford Shakespeare Festival (Ontario Canada) and was awarded. The production she appeared in earned praise from Canadian theater critics. She accepted the invitation to attend Stratford's conservatory, a program where only four men and eight women are able to take an intensive 20-week training in classical theater. The actor's involvement in the upcoming play-season was confirmed and she received the role of Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
